Today, KAWS’s oeuvre encompasses art toys, sculptures and colorful paintings and prints that appropriate pop phenomena like the Smurfs, the Simpsons and SpongeBob SquarePants. KAWS was his tag, chosen simply because he liked the way it looked. In the beginning, Brian Donnelly was just a kid from Jersey City, New Jersey, who got into the graffiti thing. Avoiding the distinction between products and art objects, KAWS has shown his work increasingly in galleries and museums over the past decade some of his most famous images are re-imagined versions of pop characters like Mickey Mouse and the Michelin Man. Since, KAWS has embraced the commercialist spirit of Claes Oldenburg and Takashi Murakami, designing everything from Kanye West album covers to Nike sneakers. He also began to collaborate on several different toys, including with Nigo (Japanese, b.1970) for A Bathing Ape. These gained international popularity, especially in Japan. In late 1990s, KAWS began to design and produce limited-edition toys. In 1998, he received the Pernod Liquid Art Award, which offers a grant to new artists. He traveled extensively to work in Paris, London, Germany, and Japan. Once KAWS began to rise in popularity, his graffiti advertisements became highly sought after. Some of his most popular works include his contributions to 101 Dalmations, Daria, and Doug. Immediately after graduation in 1996 from SVA, KAWS began working as a freelance artist for Disney. His images were seen on billboards, bus stops, and in phone booths. KAWS’s career began as a graffiti artist in New York, NY, in the early 1990s.
